Sightseeing

Nio Park Festival and Nio-mon Mountain Race

Every year, 3,000 people from Ayabe City and elsewhere attend the biggest event in the Oku-Kanbayashi district. The quiet, mountainous area becomes full of excitement, with the Furusato Tent Village selling local specialties such as horse chestnut rice cakes, sweet red bean porridge, and rice mixed with seasonal ingredients, and a drum performance by local elementary school children. The Nio-mon Mountain Race is held on the same day. The race has several courses, the longest and most challenging of which begins at Nio Park and end at the Nio-mon Gate (a National Treasure flanked by two fearsome deities) at Komyo-ji Temple, with a height differential of 262 meters.
